We’re Offically Tourists

By Elisa|family, Mawwige is What Bwings Us Togevah, Norah Norah|4 Comments

Welp, we’ve officially lived out of Northern VA long enough so that when we DO visit, we find ourselves doing tourist-y things like visiting the National Mall. Since we went up during the week our evenings were booked but we found ourselves with some deliciously free time during the day. And even though Norah is only seven months old we thought, hey, why not venture into DC. Museums, to be exact.

Oh yeah, and Ryan was excited to wear her, so I helped him strap her in. Oh sweet, sweet, baby-wearing husband.

Month Seven

By Elisa|Norah Norah|2 Comments

month-07

This past month can only be characterized by OMGMILESTONES. Sitting up without assistance, pivoting, rocking, crawling. Even downward dog and some impressive baby yoga moves.

We’ve also dragged her all over creation (to VA and back – twice!) and she’s been a traveling trooper. In fact, I chose to dress her in white (the presence of all color!) in honor of my sister who got married this past week. So, at seven months, Norah attended her first wedding. She was awesome. She also got to met lots of relatives who showered her in hugs and kisses and lots of love.

Her sleep is still shit but it’s a process, even though she has no teeth yet but I’ve been telling her gums to take her sweet sweet time. Lack of teeth don’t slow her down when it comes to solids, and here’s to hoping it doesn’t effect her sleep too much,

Otherwise, this has been a big month in babyland!

Crawling and Clovers

By Elisa|family, Green Thumb, Norah Norah, Olive|5 Comments

Month six has been an interesting one. I’ve become a full-blown accidental stay-at-home-mom and Norah has been eating, and pivoting, and rocking, and crawling, and even downward-dogging. So. Many. Milestones. Sleep has been shit but I think we’re (hopefully?) beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Some days I struggle to make the good outweigh the bad, but then one moment you’re trying to wrangle a VERY smelly dog who’s just had her run around the neighborhood AGAIN because your hands are always so fucking full and you have to make ten trips into the house with the garage door-door wide open and she always sees her opening and TAKES IT (while June stands in an open doorway wagging her tail dutifully), and her paws are all red with clay and she’s definitely rolled in something (goose poop?) and you finally just plop the baby down in a patch of recently mowed clover so you can gently maneuver the Brittany towards the corner of the yard closest to the neighbor that’s out watching you and giggling at with you so you can hose off that shit, literally. Then you release the beast and she goes bounding off happily, trying to shake off and gallop at the same time, and you notice your little girl is pivoting and crawling through the BEST GREEN STUFF EVER and examining little leaves and ohmygodwhereisthecamera.

One Week of Solids

By Elisa|Baby, Clean It Up, Edibles, family, June, Norah Norah, Olive|5 Comments

We did it! Last week (last Tuesday, to be exact) I bit the bullet and started Norah on solids. She was SO ready – chewing motions, reaching for food, sitting unassisted, and the like.

We decided to jump in both feet and try baby-led weaning – where it’s all about placing food on the tray and letting the baby feed themselves. You give them large pieces of food (usually “chip” shaped, or french fry-shaped) that’s soft enough to be bitten off and chewed.

It sounded a bit intimating compared to purees and spoons but I really felt Norah was old enough to handle it (it’s suggested waiting 6 months *at least* with this method.) Baby-led wean’ers sing praises that it’s easier – baby gets what you’re eating! Let them control their intake! Everyone can eat dinner at the same time! Create good eating habits!

It all sounded well and good, but a week before declaring we’d start solids I found myself semi-frantically Googling pictures of what (and how big and how much) people were feeding their babies. I’ve heard avocado is a FANTASTIC first food, but my baby can’t just eat avocado every day, right?

Well, the first day was indeed avocado, but I promise we mixed it up throughout the week, hah. So without further ado..

Our first day went mooost excellently. We waited for Ryan to get home so he could sit in on the action. We stripped that little nugget down and let her do her thing. It was awesome to watch her get totally excited, eat a decent amount, and get completely covered in food.

A few things we learned:
Depending on the size of the item, she would shove a lot of food in her mouth at one time. Almost shockingly. If you read about baby-led weaning they talk in detail about coughing/gagging – the gag reflex is much closer to the front of the mouth in babies then in adults, purposefully so, so that they can clear their airway weeell before they actually choke. It’s not uncommon for babies to cough or sputter, although we were pleasantly surprised that Norah didn’t do this at all. If she tore off a piece too large she’d simply spit most of it out, grab it (or let it fall into her lap, hah) and try again. Both methods (yep, even coughing) are supposed to help babies measure an appropriate size piece of food.

Banana, day two and three:

We also learned peaches stain like the dickens. Rest In Peace monkey onesie.

We tried to balance fruits and veggies with rather.. mixed results. Some say start veggies first, other say fruits. We just went with it. So after some flavor-packed avocados and fruits Norah found squash to be rather anti-climatic.

But they eventually compromised.

And lastly, it isn’t about how much food they eat, but about the tastes, sights, smells, and fine motor control. Some days they’ll eat a lot (I think she ate half the banana!), others, not so much. Even though she certainly liked carrot better than squash, she swallowed maybe, two small bites? They get better over time (pincher grip!) but all babies are different. She still breastfeeds around the clock and I look at the calories she’s consuming as complete bonus.

And how are the dogs taking to all this?

So there you have it. Baby-led weaning. Or baby-led solids. Or the Lazy Mom’s Intro to Solids. Only a week in but so far it’s working out well for us.

However, I am currently mourning the loss of exclusively breastfed poop. I had no idea how good I had it.

Month Six

By Elisa|family, Norah Norah|1 Comment

month-6

Half a year! Six months! Twenty-six weeks! 182 days!

I am so proud to say I’m her mama – she’s such a happy, healthy, AWESOME BABY.

Six months has been interesting – it’s a huge milestone, not just because us humans love round numbers and half of things, but a lots has been going on. No teeth yet (and taking their time, thankfully), but we started solids last week and she’s been. loving. it. I’ll post more about starting solids later this week, but it’s unreal watching your baby shove a whole banana into her virgin mouth, bite off a piece then start making cute little humming noises as she chews. CHEWS. A baby that’s never had anything other than milk.

She’s also been sitting (albeit a bit wobbly), rolling onto her belly quite expertly, getting up to her knees and rocking back and forth. She still only moves backwards at this point (quite normal — arms still much stronger than legs), but she wants to be gunning forward and when I give her something to push off she’s absolutely delighted. Girl, I am SO not ready to baby proof my house yet but your zest for forward motion will soon be leaving me no choice. Homegirl wants to move, which left me with a whole lot of photos like this:

Love this crazy little girl. Happy half-birthday, Norah!

To Grandmother’s House We Go!

By Elisa|family, Norah Norah, Places We've Been|5 Comments

So last LAST week my parents got themselves moved into the wild wild west, or about 20 miles south of Asheville, North Carolina. They’re just under two hours away, so I packed myself, Norah, and aaalll of her things into the Element and headed into the mountains. It’s the perfect drive – Norah slept through the whole thing – all 95.7 miles of it.

Upon arrival we then proceeded to unpack boxes, hang out, unpack boxes, makes sandwiches, romp through the woods, unpack boxes, drink a beer or two, unpack boxes. You get the gist.

So can we agree that Norah is just a tiny extension of Ryan? They are making the same. face.

Norah’s Nursery

By Elisa|Hizouse|7 Comments

It has been 156 days since Norah’s birth (that’s a lot of days) and I’m happy to say her nursery is complete.

Lots of reasons I decided to wait until after she was born to finish the nursery. Mainly because we didn’t know she was a she, but I’m so glad we took our time putting in the finishing touches.

And last but certainly not least, Mission Control. (I promise I didn’t match the baby to her nursery on purpose.)

Still one of my favorite purchases for Norah’s nursery. She’s always been fascinated by it but now, when Tall Daddy holds her she reaches for it immediately.
