Third Adoptiversary

By Elisa|June|7 Comments

Three years ago today we adopted this sweet little girl.

This was the first picture I posted of her. I mean, we’d just met her, signed paperwork, drove her an hour home and introduced her to a new dog and new yard. And look how happy!

Don’t think she’s stopped wagging her tail since.

After bringing Olive home over a year ago and going so. slow. with everything, I was amazed at how easily June fit into our lives. She was a bit on edge the first day, but then we went up for bed, she went right into her crate (both dogs have always loved their crates) and woke up the next morning, followed Olive’s lead, was promptly fed breakfast, and was like, okay, cool, I live here now. You people seem nice!

June, you’re a sweet girl, and have embraced and bonded to your sister (even though you’ll always be a people-dog at heart.)

Olive loves you and I’m starting to suspect you may love her back.

TOUCHING

And even though you’re not the baby anymore…

One Week of Solids

By Elisa|Baby, Clean It Up, Edibles, family, June, Norah Norah, Olive|5 Comments

We did it! Last week (last Tuesday, to be exact) I bit the bullet and started Norah on solids. She was SO ready – chewing motions, reaching for food, sitting unassisted, and the like.

We decided to jump in both feet and try baby-led weaning – where it’s all about placing food on the tray and letting the baby feed themselves. You give them large pieces of food (usually “chip” shaped, or french fry-shaped) that’s soft enough to be bitten off and chewed.

It sounded a bit intimating compared to purees and spoons but I really felt Norah was old enough to handle it (it’s suggested waiting 6 months *at least* with this method.) Baby-led wean’ers sing praises that it’s easier – baby gets what you’re eating! Let them control their intake! Everyone can eat dinner at the same time! Create good eating habits!

It all sounded well and good, but a week before declaring we’d start solids I found myself semi-frantically Googling pictures of what (and how big and how much) people were feeding their babies. I’ve heard avocado is a FANTASTIC first food, but my baby can’t just eat avocado every day, right?

Well, the first day was indeed avocado, but I promise we mixed it up throughout the week, hah. So without further ado..

Our first day went mooost excellently. We waited for Ryan to get home so he could sit in on the action. We stripped that little nugget down and let her do her thing. It was awesome to watch her get totally excited, eat a decent amount, and get completely covered in food.

A few things we learned:
Depending on the size of the item, she would shove a lot of food in her mouth at one time. Almost shockingly. If you read about baby-led weaning they talk in detail about coughing/gagging – the gag reflex is much closer to the front of the mouth in babies then in adults, purposefully so, so that they can clear their airway weeell before they actually choke. It’s not uncommon for babies to cough or sputter, although we were pleasantly surprised that Norah didn’t do this at all. If she tore off a piece too large she’d simply spit most of it out, grab it (or let it fall into her lap, hah) and try again. Both methods (yep, even coughing) are supposed to help babies measure an appropriate size piece of food.

Banana, day two and three:

We also learned peaches stain like the dickens. Rest In Peace monkey onesie.

We tried to balance fruits and veggies with rather.. mixed results. Some say start veggies first, other say fruits. We just went with it. So after some flavor-packed avocados and fruits Norah found squash to be rather anti-climatic.

squash-day-6-1

squash-day-6-2

But they eventually compromised.

And lastly, it isn’t about how much food they eat, but about the tastes, sights, smells, and fine motor control. Some days they’ll eat a lot (I think she ate half the banana!), others, not so much. Even though she certainly liked carrot better than squash, she swallowed maybe, two small bites? They get better over time (pincher grip!) but all babies are different. She still breastfeeds around the clock and I look at the calories she’s consuming as complete bonus.

And how are the dogs taking to all this?

So there you have it. Baby-led weaning. Or baby-led solids. Or the Lazy Mom’s Intro to Solids. Only a week in but so far it’s working out well for us.

However, I am currently mourning the loss of exclusively breastfed poop. I had no idea how good I had it.

First Snows!

By Elisa|family, June, Norah Norah, Olive, Pets|4 Comments

Well, only NORAH’S first snow, but the whole fam got to enjoy it.

Let’s start with the four-leggers.

June is always rather hesitant.. (even with a Tiennots Knits Sweater!)

im-good

But she did eventually have to pee.

Olive, on the other hand… the Resident Sentry.

Then, of course, I dragged my sister outside and made her take plenty of pictures of Norah and I.. starting to worry Norah would look back one day and not be sure *who* took care of her then.

No smiles for these pictures — she’s got the same expression in all of them. I think her face was starting to freeze. Drool probably didn’t help.

I’ve Been…

By Elisa|family, June, Norah Norah, Olive, Pets, Writing Bored|1 Comment

Recently I’ve been busy, good busy.

I’ve been sewing, a lot.

been-sewing

I’ve been attacking a few final projects in Norah’s room (between an antenatal broken sewing machine and not knowing that Norah was a girl, I decided to wait on a few things) and I’ve been working on her glider!

Also, I made a few bibs!

serious-face

A few? Don’t lie. You made one.

eyebrows-face

But I inTENDED on making a few.

I’ve also been cooking! In the crockpot! Everyone sings the prasies of ye ol’ crockpot, I just always ignored them. Until now.

been-cooking

I’ve also been eating.

and-eating

Also, the puppies. THEY’RE TOUCHING.

TOUCHING

June must have wanted the seat that badly or they finally realized they’re going to have to turn to each other for attention.

sooo-nice-out

Although most of the time they still just pretend neither exists.

Just In Time For Fall…

By Elisa|Hizouse, June, The Great Outdoors|3 Comments

…we got these lovely ladies? Gentlemen? Items of interest?

backyard2

Just kidding, we actually got some good use out of them already, even in August. I’m a bit behind because August was busy, but awesome. These chairs have already experienced that which are a bunch of girls making s’mores at 11pm.

We got them for a song off craigslist ($20 a piece!) and although they need a bit of work, they’ll still hold up great over the winter, until I can redo them in the spring.

Here’s a somewhat decent picture of what we were rocking previously — a well-meaning table and chairs set bought from Garden Ridge a few years back.

Backyard

It has served us well, but we *never* used the table (guilty, not really a fan of eating outside), and had mainly just used it to set drinks upon while watching humans and non-humans run around the yard.

So at the height of patio season we were able to sell it for $60, bought the chairs for $80, and scootched the fire pit over to it’s rightful place. Now THAT is an upgrade.

And see, June even likes ‘em. Although she was not into the modeling scene yesterday.

Anatomy of a Double Dog Bath

By Elisa|Clean It Up, June, Olive, Pets|5 Comments

dry-time

Door is closed, towels are stacked nearby.. mama smells vaguely of liver treats. Oh dear, this is really happening. June, quick! Put on your most pitiful face.

fail-whale

And that blue water-shooty whale.. it is so cute, yet so evil.

stink-eye

Pitiful face isn’t working. Plan B – the almighty stink eye. I practice outside the tub so I’m in perfect form during the really critical times.

hooray-we-are-done

See, the stink eye worked! Hoorays! We are done! We smell a little funny and my ears are little heavy.. but for those liver treats? Totally worth it.

Where The Belly Will Reside When It Stops Being a Belly

By Elisa|Baby, Hizouse, June|18 Comments

By no means is the nursery finished, but so help me, it looks like a nursery! Where a baby or extremely tired new parents could live!

junes-nursery

Don’t mind the June-dog. Even when I’m not in the room, these pups, especially Olive (who is just out of sight in the doorway practicing her nanny-dog position) looove this room. Don’t blame em, there’s some quality stuff here.

Like.. the crib! Mattress-less but Big Gray Elephant is holding down the fort. I could go one and one about how we searched for cribs, but doesn’t *everyone* do exhaustive searches? So I found a handful I liked (and had good ratings, and quality wood, etc, etc), showed them all to Ryan, and we unanimously agreed it was THE BEST. Babyletto Hudson 3 in 1 Convertible Crib. And lots of thanks to my Brother-in-law and fam for their generous crib-gift. They rock.

awesomeness-crib

And on the opposite wall, the most lovely dresser, if I do say so.

nursery-dresser

A little paint and sweat went into this bad boy. It was a lovely biscuit-y cream, was missing knobs, and had seemed to have been a temporary coloring book, – at one point. A few foam rollers, some sanding, priming, and no-VOC painting and I’m quite pleased. The lower knobs came with the dresser and got spray-painted. The higher eight knobs are actually wooden, from home depot – about $1. Ryan spotted these and thought the circular knobs would give it a great child-like touch – and it totally does. And since all the paint is high gloss you can’t tell the difference between the lower metal knobs and upper wooden ones. Score.

Now upward, to dandelion goodness.

i-love-light-fixture

And once you tear your eyes away from the ceiling and come back down to Earth, this is a better glance of where we’re at, so far.

dual-nursery

I definitely get a dumb grin on my face every time I walk by. Sometimes I turn the light on at night just to stare. Sometimes I’m dreaming about our future little one, sometimes I’m just thinking about what to do next.

So.. here’s a list. For list’s sake!

Caulk and Paint Crown Molding
Paint inside of closet
Line dresser drawers
Possibly add frame or two (and paint that black one white) and switch out artwork in frame gallery
Painting FOR the blank canvas on the gallery wall
Add book ledges to wall near door (not pictured)
Slipcover the rocker. Still unsure of what fabric and/or color.
Possibly standing lamp behind the glider.

In the coming week my mission in life is to paint the closet – since that’s really the last BIG thing, other than perhaps covering that glider. Although I found a phenomenal tutorial which makes me feel not so scurred.

And oh yeah, um, someone broke the sewing machine last week, and if you follow me on Twitter (I am THAT scary important) I broke a multitude of sewing needles before realizing one of the gears had broken on my oooold Singer. And since I only paid $35 for the sewing-machine-in-a-table in the first place…

What I’m trying to say is, does anyone have a sewing machine?

Thanks.

Ruggy

By Elisa|June, Lil Bear, Things and Stuff|11 Comments

Finally, zee new rug has arrived. Ordered it at the beginning of May, waiting patiently for over a month for it to come in (backordered, gah).. but 1000% worth the wait.

ruggy1

Also, upon snapping a few pictures I realized the rug needs to be scooted toward the wall a few more inches. So I Photoshopped the above photo. Somewhat badly.

ruggy2

It is SO NICE to finally have a rug in this living room. Sitting on the floor, rarely working out on the floor, playing with the puppies on the floor without them ramming into whatever furniture that is in their path because they get no traaaction. Phew.

It also provides some gnarly backdrops.

gnarly-dude

And yes, that is Lily is attacking a dog toy on the top right.

If you’ve got a cat you’ll likely nod in agreement, but this is the sequence of events that usually goes down:
Lily walks up nonchalantly, or lays by the toy for minutes while is seemingly undisturbed.
Then for no reason* the toy is attacked!!
Biting followed by back leg kicking. Lil Bear shows this thing no mercy.
After a few good pauses and resumes, she takes one last kick and..
She’s off! Shoots off into whatever direction she fancies, usually right up the stairs.

*At least none that our feebly human brains can determine

Needless to say Lily LOVES the new rug. Or something.

Since it took a month to come in I totally forgot to buy a rug pad, but so far it’s doing pretty great without one. We might get a pad before the baby arrives, if we feel so inclined. But I also confessed to Ryan we needed one other little upgrade before baby arrives.

baby-tv

I’ve enjoyed having a small little TV in our living room (32″ to be exact) and have taken a bit of pride in it when people constantly complain that it’s too small. But now. Yeah. I can’t see the damn thing from the kitchen and if I’m going to holed up in this house for weeks come October than yep. TV time. No timeframe yet but our eyeballs are peeled for a deal.

And while I was sitting on the couch I decided to take this..

art1

And swap it with this.

art2

Love the switch, now just need to scoot the picture over down and left a bit and really anchor the screws into the wall — this guy is much heavier then his previous counterpart, even with the flimsy cheap-ass frame. Which I also kinda like.

For now, we bid you adieu. June has lots of weird sunbeam sleeping to catch up on.

ruggy-june

Ooo, also, anyone else go rug-pad-less? Does it make that much of a cushy difference or it is just supposed to keep the rug in place? The massive couch does a pretty good job of that..
